Experience is hard to attain if your industry isn't very interested in hiring your gender (sex/class/or what have you) in the first place. It creates an insular and nigh impenetrable culture of exclusion.

Totally agree about background checks, of course. Unfortunately, there's also the consideration of how many predators would come up totally clean on a background check. So many men are first accused well into their 60s and 70s — it's not like they just started then. So much wreckage along the way. :(

Every time there's a natural disaster or upheaval and chaos will ensue (for whatever period of time) with tons of vulnerable children who are going to be hard to account for, I cringe and consider saying a prayer for those poor souls even though I don't believe in God. Totally agree about the background checks. Unfortunately, so many of these teen volunteers get to go because hey, why not? Instead of sending trained, background-checked folks, so many, many religious groups round up dozens of teenagers to do some poverty tourism. Ridiculous on so many levels.

I do a lot of work with churches and I stress the need for them to conduct background checks and fully screen individuals who work with kids. You would not believe how many of them don't currently do it or just out right refuse to (they don't want to INSULT anybody). I know this was not a church organization, but…
