I disagree on the theme that the doctor messes up his companions. I think, after spending time with him, they're greater than they ever could have been. They might no longer fit into smaller lives, but - they're not fucked up. They're different, changed - but not for the worse.

They may have been thinking of the studies which show that social isolation can have a negative impact on brain function. The thing is, those studies were done on people in total isolation, not folks with easy access to socialization via jobs & internet communities.
