I met Lynn Redgrave several years ago, when she came to speak and present a small film (The Annihilation of Fish) at an art-house movie theater on Long Island where my aunt worked. I got to spend some time with her — she was such a nice and friendly woman. I introduced myself by my first name, Rachel — she said "oh,

@TimFritz: I was there that year — it was a very fun day with a terribly sad ending. Here's a pic I snapped of Eight Belles before the race, she was a real beauty:

@Dark Song: NCHS grad & Indy resident here — I feel your pain. I suspect that in Veerkamp, we have one noisy Teabagger who's trying to make a name for himself — I'd bet money that he's planning to run for elected office.

Song Of One Of The Girls

@JennaW: I think Lord of the Rings: Return of the King might count as first SF to win? (Although I won't get into the subjective intricacies of "sci-fi" categorization...)

@alexandrahamilton aka jcb820: ITA. And I think Avatar mostly got the Oscars it deserved (all except Cinematography; I think that was an achievement in visual effects, not cinematography). Plus, how could something possibly win Best Picture if its screenplay isn't even nominated?!?

@boxem180: I had to walk past the Acacia house on a nice spring day, more than once, and was subjected to similar DudeBrahs and their handmade rating signs. Not fun. (First time I've ever heard of The Odyssey too — but hey, I lived in Collins, it's not exactly my beat.)

@booktart: And to clarify, I don't actually hate Purdue. Or any school. Except maybe Duke, they're just smug bastards. Go Butler!!

@Janet.Jopler.is.on.my.mind.grapes: Oh, well, then a pox upon you, and so forth! (I'm a 3rd-gen IU grad, but am happy to root for Butler — and I hate Duke with the fire of a thousand suns, even more than Purdue.)

@zoethebitch: Yes, I knew she was the "Eleanor" of "Eleanor Rigby"...and she was awesome as Miss Minchin!

Looks like Sara Crewe, ever-wary of Miss Minchin.

@kerry: Ha, I was totally listening for Widmore, though! I swear I jumped when they said the first half-syllable of Whitfield and then wilted at the "t".

@kerry: Actually I think it was "Whitfield" or something like that...it was close to Widmore, but not quite it.

@stacyinbean: Yes — and are the writers playing on the word "lies" in that sentence?!? There's something sinister about Jacob's look — I can't put my finger on it, but I don't trust him...

@stacyinbean: Yep, I think so. Did we ever find out why Ilana and her crew use Latin? Did Jacob speak to Ilana in Latin when he visited her in the hospital, in last night's ep (the first couple of sentences, before they switched to English)? I need to watch again.

@hook and line: The "forgiveness" line was about something so trivial that I can't imagine it would be an instance where Flocke was lying to Sawyer. It seemed to be genuine to me, somehow, and a tip as to Flocke's nature as something other than pure evil. (But who knows!!) And I do think Jacob just conjured up that

1. Didn't the storm come on really suddenly, like they had sunlight and then all of a sudden it was storming? Would fit in with the long shot of Jacob/MIB sitting on the beach looking at the ship in calm waters, and then having it come crashing ashore.

@L'Chaim!: Yes, and the Douglas Sirk Fantasia feel somehow fills in some of the cracks that I might see otherwise, with regard to script and character. (I have only seen the 1959 remake with Lana Turner — not the 1934 original.)
