I highly recommend a Harlem Renaissance-era novella by Nella Larsen, called Passing. If you can get your hands on the Penguin Classics edition, it has a really thought-provoking introduction, also (which I read after finishing the novella). It made me think about the idea of race as a choice — something I had never

@Kitty Conner: "We're rebuilding — but we'll be back!" (I have said this many times over the last few days — including to my boss, who went to Northwestern and attended yesterday's game.)

@laetitiae: Yeah, and I generally love her, but I have to say that reading a quote from her saying "Obviously you can't play a romantic character if she's not really pretty" makes me damn sad.

@ides: I think there is no boat, but nobody's brave enough to tell them.

@leesie: I saw Brooke Shields in Cabaret on Broadway — my expectations were low, but she ROCKED the Sally Bowles. She came out and stretched/warmed up in front of the audience before the show, chatting with people in the crowd, seemed really nice and fun and excited to be on Broadway. She's amazingly tall, I hadn't

@Annabellie: I also heart science. Have been trying to decide which of the following I'm going to buy sometime soon:

Elle est magnifique. Haven't seen Public Enemies yet, but am a big fan of Cotillard after La Vie en Rose. And quel visage — she has one of those faces that will still be so beautiful and striking when she's 80. I feel like I can see what her old-lady face will be like, from this picture. @liz.lemonade: BSG = best show on TV since The West Wing (seasons 1-4 especially), IMHO. And I've seen none better since. McDonnell and Olmos, squee.

@mfnher: Will you please post a link, if you find it online? Thanks.

@pyrrhic: Was "pyrrhic" one of your words? I love that word.

@frankie22: "Is there a Mr. Cadillac?"

@randomnessish: The law distinguishes a difference between defense of self and defense of property...I didn't watch this ep (or clip, I'm at work) but from what I've read here, seems like it's defense of property in this case, to which a self-defense argument would not apply. The original crime was theft.

Dammit, I just cancelled my HBO!

Favorites = vermillion, crepuscular

Had 8TH ROW tix for her a few years ago, she is a fucking ROCK STAR. Awesome.

(late to the party, as usual)

@lilacjive: Monet going blind — what an odd injustice. Like Beethoven going deaf.

@lalaland13: Santorum, oy. There's no excuse for agreeing with him! Ha.

I just about did a spit-take when I read this because Marc Tuttle, this Marc Tuttle, is my ex-boyfriend. He married a friend of mine from high school. They're both sweet and fun and hilarious people who I have not seen since I left our college town years ago, but I think back fondly on them both.
