I think you're remembering history they way you'd like to. Like the iPhone 4s it kept the same form factor as its predecessor. It was faster and had a better camera. The 4s is faster and has a better camera. It had the compass... in it's place the 4s offers better battery life and and way better antennae.

In some ways I hope it isn't opt in. Too many times I've bought an app and the app is garbage (review system is broken and can be cheated). To me this would force app developers to be on top form and could weed out the hacks producing crap.
