The 135i is so cheap right now, it’s like the forgotten gem, it just makes sense. You’ll have a huge budget left over for maintenance (you’ll need more with an n54 car, but both are all right if you’re prepared for it) and mods. All chassis components from the 1M/M3 are a bolt-on affair and available from OEMs without…
I prefer the looks of the Supra, and like the idea of owning an oddball sports car, but yeah, it just doesn’t make a good case for itself.
In addition, the original (MKIV, anyway) wasn’t exactly a lithe, tossable sports car either, more of a grand tourer than anything.
I did this as a senior project, the benefits were negligible due to additional mass and exploded cost, although that was 15 years ago. You’re thinking of Peltier Generators (Thermoelectric Generators).
A thermocouple is just a device to measure temperature. If you covered your exhaust system with them, you’d have some excellent temperature data, but no energy transfer. I believe you might be thinking of a thermoelectric generator to fit your idea. https://phys.org/news/2018-07-electrical-power.html
You know that’s not what thermocouples do, right?
...heavy breathing...
The 1JZ is about 50 pounds lighter. Even if the block is the same, there are many things that still make it lighter. That’s a big deal for all the nose heavy 90s Toyotas. They weren’t pushing the engine as far back as possible. They put it in some pretty badass 90s Toyota sedans though. That’s more street cred to me…
Remember when SARD entered a Supra in the 1995 24 hours of le mans?
The 1JZ and 2JZ are basically identical engines. They weight the same. Have the same design and layout. I believe the only difference is the stroke meaning they probably even use the same block. Arguing that the 2JZ is an old engine but that the 1JZ is better seems to be mis-informed.
Not sure if you’re being sarcastic but high 12s has to be a really bad driver. A stock M4 does 12.0 according to C&D with probably half the horsepower.
I’m not bashing the 2JZ. I’m bashing the lovefest. I understand the motor for what it was in its appropriate context.
I’m not sick of it. I’m sick of people worshiping it for what it’s not.
The B58 is an alloy block but it is a closed deck block so there is a lot of strength there. I’m very curious to know what will happen to it now that it’s opened it to a whole extra audience of tuning. It took a very long time for flash tunes to be developed for the previous 3L six (N55).
Is it factory forged? I know nothing of the BMW engines other than that they can make over 400hp with just a tune, but I believe you need a turbo swap to go higher than that. No idea if they’re forged or not, but the nikasil engine lining doesn’t bode well for serious power IMO.
The JZ is overrated.
Fun stats about the 4th gen Supra and E36 M3 (from wikipedia, don’t slay me):
Holy... I just realized that this car is Scarlett Johansson in Under The Skin, fake vents and all.
Was it that amazing though? Yeah it was strong, but it was iron. No modern engine should have a block made out of some heavy-ass iron. Turning up the boost is fun, but so is turning your now rocket ship.
