Very simple. M2 and M2 Competition are different cars even though they are both on same chassis. It is not just the engines, either.

The BMW front struts are not simple McPherson struts.  They incorporate a lot of clever design modifications to improve the limitations of the original design.  The 911 even uses a variation of the McPherson strut.

Honda could not meet their requirements.  That is why they turned to BMW.  

Those are M2 Competition with S55. All M2 have N55. All 1M have N54B30T0 also shared with 335is coupe.

Z4 is a little faster on the Nordschleife. The M2 Competition is faster still.
