I’m guessing they don’t really want emails. They probably want contacts, messages, pictures, notes etc that are residing locally on the phone.

Very interesting hypothetical situation. I guess Apple would still take the same stand but the public outcry would be much, much worse. That’s because Apple’s opinion right now has nothing to do with the situation but future impact. Your hypothetical situation doesn’t really change any of that.

Not really... the FBI’s spin on this shooter’s iPhone is that the potential treasure trove of information obtained can help them in their fight against terrorism - which will inevitably save lives. But yes, to your point, saving a live child in the very near future is kinda different.

Actually, the original court order said it could be “alternatively, transferred to an Apple campus” provided the FBI is given remote access to the computer doing all the naughty, nerdy stuff to the iPhone.

No no no... the issue is a company complying to a government order of creating a backdoor. That’s the precedent that Apple doesn’t want to set, that’s the dangerous thing that Tim Cook referred to in his letter. The technicalities are secondary. It’s a different issue if McAfee can do it ‘coz he’s doing it of his own

I’m pretty sure this qualifies as a special case of “anyone who gets into trouble” and it’s rational to disassociate yourself from that person with the full backing of the ethics committee.

But but but Eileen, it’s not about the information on the iPhone 5c, it’s not about this one shooter & it’s not about Apple. It’s the big picture. The “slippery slope” is about the big picture - that the government can use archaic laws or any means necessary to compel a company to make products that it feels is right.

There was a new report that came out this morning with evidence that Apple wanted & suggested to keep in on the down-low but the Feds brought it out in the open by releasing the court-order. I saw it on Reddit but I can post a link once I get home.

Tomorrow’s headline “District court judge demands that Apple install a Touch ID sensor on the shooter’s iPhone. Apple given 2 additional days to respond.”

Very true! It looks like an image from Magic Leap. BTW, I’m really looking forward to their products!

Hindsight is a bitch.

Getting a car or two is only good for the short-term. Getting a big check is also a bit short-term but gives more options. I’d either prefer a small stake in the company (bunch of stocks) or some sort of longer-term option like employment with good terms or royalty per website visit. A big check might be big in

I’m really glad Yellowstone figures in your list, ‘course it would have! I’ve meaning to plan a trip there quickly in the next few weeks for fantastic winterscapes and ever since I learnt that you can get hiking tours of wolf watching with people involved in their conservation. How amazing would that be!!!

Downstairs from you? Where do you work!! :)

I’m surprised the Humpback whale picture got second place... it’s clearly a winner.

Lol, perfect analogy through & through.

While it may be so that your HTC has a better battery life than your friend’s 6S, it’s really not a conclusive statement. It really depends on how each of you use your phones. Especially when you go camping, various people use their phones differently - GPS, LED light, movies, camera, Facetwittergramming etc. Saying

:) It certainly does! In the thumbnail in LH’s main page, it really does look like an iPhone.

Looks more like a Dart 2.0 to me!

I agree that Apple will get their arm twisted... the question is how resilient their arm is and how high is their pain threshold... unless, this goes to Congress and they settle it properly but I doubt anyone has the patience to take it that far, given the urgency on hand to obtain information from the phone. To your
