Pretty much, the 2nd amendment (in theory) was put in place in case of possible rebellion of our government if it got too powerful or took away our rights. A government that takes away a citizen’s right to protect themselves no longer has nothing to fear.

Show them how Americans have done nothing to combat of something erroding our rights like The PATRIOT Act and they would probably make the 2nd amendment more specific to incur for such things.
