This might be an unpopular opinion, but stereotypes are often based on a grain of truth. There are a lot of black people where, if you poison their children, they won’t think it’s fair to tell them they have to pay for the poison. The problem is that Ruth Madoff is neither ignorant nor uneducated. That line of dialogue (in the above clip) where Ruth asks, “what is a Ponzi scheme?” is inconceivable.

The most effort this movie exerts is in getting De Niro to look like Madoff in order to recreate certain pictures that were widely seen in the media.

DeNiro, Pfieffer et al gave strong performances, but the Dreyfus/Danner film was better. The two part movie spent more time exposing the dysfunctional environment within Madoff’s company, as well as giving the character’s of the sons and the brother’s more development.

I almost think a movie about the daughters-in-law would be way more interesting. Not that they would want to relive the experience or see themselves exploited like that, but in some ways they would serve as better exemplars of mostly-innocent victims of the scheme.
