Depends where you were. In England you’d probably have a jointure, settled on you for life, but the children would inherit the bulk of the fortune... if there was one. In France and Italy it was different.

There were a lot of young widows, because merchants tended to marry later in life but pick young women straight from the convent, aged 15 or 16. A lot of women died in childbirth and the widowers tended to marry again, still from the same age-group.…
