My friend is super-smart and just got a doctorate in English and never highlights anything he reads for school, ever. He can retain the information without it and quote long passages from memory. He says highlighting compromises the experience of reading literature*. I'm so jealous! I have to highlight and take margin

I'm just sort of confused by the purpose of highlighting in general. I've read probably 150 books on my Kindle, and never highlighted anything except maybe by accident.

I'm wondering if this is just because people become less inclined to highlight as they read?
