You need to understand the MPG difference. A3 uses a DSG automatic - that's real gears and two clutches. Same as the Jetta TDI that I drive. It sometimes makes poor shift decisions but overall it's way better than a true slushbox.

I did notice that my ice was clearer when I installed a reverse osmosis filter setup that also fed my ice maker. Sadly that only lasted a little while and the ice is cloudy but filtering it does seem to have some merit.
