Well, you should definitely take time to learn some of the basics before rooting, but it can be very simple to root a phone. Most GS4 models can be rooted with towelroot, which literally takes less than 2 minutes to download, install and root.

If you're in a car, just plug it in to the charger and you should be better off than when you started. Battery life comes in to play when using GPS while walking, riding a bike, public transportation, etc. You're right about screen off to save battery.
