bonkers. bananas. crazypants.
I have a friend who loves to argue that irregardless “is a real word because it’s in the dictionary” and that because language evolves over time, blah blah blah, whatever.
It goes the other way, too.
Adding to this: “John, you’re across this issue.” WHAT THE FUCK. Across?!
“Reining in” needs to stop. Also, the number of times I’ve seen it misspelled as “reigning in” - wtf?
Ultimately, it’s not about using a big word or a small word, it’s about using the right word. Over and over. And that’s what makes writing, and editing, so damned hard.
Grrr, I STILL can't believe that "irregardless" won. Stupidity always carries the day!
Pet peeves: Using “random” inappropriately. Having a “take” on something or someone. “Irregardless”, although this one is actually acceptable now. Not by me, buddy.
That’s not considered a big word in academic circles. Your teacher should get a damn dictionary. Teachers used to have some responsibility to actually know things. I have a friend who teaches English. His emails to me are full of misspellings.
When journalism writers stop referring to every controversial subject as “-gate”, then we’ll talk.
But on the other hand, don’t spend half a sentence saying something that can be said more simply with one or two apropritly chosen words.
Can someone please explain Opens > bows to me? I’m not reading it right or something because it makes no sense. Or should I just call Taffy and ask her, since she has her phone number listed in her Twitter bio for some reason (wtf)?
Use “donnish” and confuse everybody :)
It’s not a bad name for a pub.
Forbidden>Verboten
Also, most of the verbs that appear in political coverage - slams, savages, attacks, etc. - could and should be replaced with “says” or maybe “criticizes.” If we stop describing verbal disagreement as physical violence, maybe it makes it easier for people to just talk to each other.
A lot of these are solid, but some of the words people want replaced literally have different meanings than the ones they want them replaced with.
Never use a long word where a shorter word will work.
I came here to pen an inquiry, What if our team commenced to shutter the local eatery in order to utilize the space for a new venture launch? Going forward gifting a bespoke fare of libations would be appreciated.
