I’m n ot really sure if HAL was sentient, but that’s a discussion for another day. HAL’s “glitch” as you call it wasn’t caused by emotions and those emotions didn’t cause the subsequent problems either. HAL was given two conflicting instructions and tried to resolve the conflict.
