Highly boosted small displacement engines seem to benefit the EPA cycle and not anything else. Large displacement engines seem to do just as well in the real world - if not better. This is a regulation problem and not a move towards good, IMHO.

Jason. Everyone will switch over to Autonomous driving. What is fun is driving on the open road. Autonomous cars will take this away because there will be more cars on the road. The easier and cheaper driving is - the more cars there are on the road.

I'd agree with Lutz. I don't think we are far off from a future we humans won't be allowed to drive.. All cars will be heavily regulated - and the government will always know where you are going and decide to some extent where you can go and when you can do it.

You are not going for just smoothness but providing a larger gear spread to maximize fuel economy. CVTs generally do not have a great spread (this is why Nissan will add planetary gears to their CVT).
