I dunno. The only real downside to insane celebrity worship would be if we somehow elected a reality TV star to the most powerful office in the free world.

You just needed to say "thinkpiece" and leave it at that.
Yeah I agree the meet-cute relationship wasn't great but that dog was wonderful.
Yeah, I hear you, I'd never be able to convince my mother to watch this either. But if people can get past the subtitles, it's mostly expertly-handled situational comedy not unlike great sitcoms.
I'm okay with a restrained approach from him, at least for this story. Kundun was restrained too, but also felt distanced from the material a bit too much, which shouldn't be an issue here.
It can't be overstated how absurdly entertaining this movie is, despite the underlying melancholy - it deserves to be a big crossover art house success. This played better with an audience than any movie I saw this year, including Rogue One. A big reason why is how Ade's knack for keen observation makes it relatable…
I loved the last act right up until fucking CGI Leia what the fuck is the matter with you assholes you ruined the movie. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this, which I raised in the spoiler space.
Maybe, but still hoping that it's a sign of good things on this.
You are correct. I was going to say the same thing - it's much slower, and that weirdly gives me a lot of hope for this not just being a simple nostalgia thing.
I agree with Katie that La La Land is the most overrated film of the year, but not for any of the reasons she stated. I found it too show-offy and overdirected, when it could have used a much lighter touch. It's basically the same approach that Chazelle used on Whiplash, but in that case the style matched the story.…
But then I wouldn't get to agree with Katie complaining about how ridiculously overrated La La Land is.
Cameraperson is my favorite film of the year so I'm disappointed to not see it in the top 20.
Hell or High Water is a lot of fun but falls short of greatness for me because of that too-on-the-nose script.
1. Cameraperson
2. Manchester By The Sea
3. Moonlight
4. Krista
5. The Handmaiden
6. Toni Erdmann
7. Homo Sapiens
8. Under The Shadow
9. The Witch
10. Elle
11. Certain Women
12. The Fits
13. The Lobster
14. Louder Than Bombs
15. The Nice Guys
They likely were clapping for that reason, but the second they saw her robes, a bunch of people started cheering. Whereas I was thinking, please don't let this be a shitty CGI Leia like Tarkin. Then she turned around and I sure as hell wasn't going to be clapping after that reveal.
CGI Cushing was just as bad, and the overuse of him seemed to be at least in part a way to set the table for the Leia thing. It makes sense for Tarkin to be a part of this story, but they leaned so heavily into it that it felt like a deliberate desire to make us okay with the idea of a CGI recreation of a well-known…
Jonah as an inept Jack Ryan would get me to watch this.
I have no idea what that is.
Fair enough. Reading it again, it does sound like I'm perpetuating a stereotype, which was not my intent - I was just trying to draw the connection that loving football also means having to reconcile oneself with the often horrendous acts of its players off the field. My favorite player is Roethlisberger, accused…
I loved Hollywood and some of Brownlow's other stuff - a shame that most of it is now out-of-print.
