I'm convinced that half the reason these films took such a hold on our generation is the unprecedented access to how the movies were actually made via making-of books and tv specials. This stuff also inspired lots of wannabe filmmakers and definitely played a role in my becoming a young cinephile.

Seconded. I had not seen much of his work until catching a screening of Boy a couple years ago, which I thought was astounding. Since then I've watched a bunch more and they are all pretty great. And he really does have a fantastic eye for widescreen compositions.
