I can still be bothered about watering down history; it bothers me in all forms of media (oh-ho, the rage storm I threw over “The Boleyn Girl.”) Perhaps what really bothers me is people refusing to learn ACTUAL history, but taking watered-down Media History as absolute fact, even if the media presented there lacks…
This is a mind set I keep seeing from self proclaimed history nerds. That because of Hamilton history is “fun.”
I have a friend like this. He says everything is dumb until it hits peak popularity & gets exposed to death, then it’s cool by his standards.
I think some are so proud of themselves for being able to care about black characters that from the rooftops it must be shouted. Or they think they’ve now seen Real Black Life (lol ok) and can’t wait to let a Real Black Person know that they “get it” now?
If you haven’t read Lyra Monteiro’s critique of the show (or listened to the interview that she did with someone from Slate) I recommend it.
If I just really love history and musicals, am I allowed to like it?
Agreed — and actually, I think he’s just completely making fun of pseudo “hip” white people AND pseudo liberals in this case. I have no problem with that.
as someone who loves hamilton: the number white people I’ve seen praising miranda as “the best rapper alive” has made me want to slap the shit out of everybody
Any guy that bases a character like George Constanza on himself and THEN goes ahead and plays a “version” of himself in the same fashion is a bit OK in my book.
I mean, I eventually watched and enjoyed The Wire. But could they have at least asked me what my name was before lecturing me about how much I would relate to a show about drug dealers? At least?
lmao
Yes. It’s the status of it and the fact that it says you’re in a certain type of educated/cool NPR listener.
You’re right and Larry’s right. Feel free to @ me, comment section.
Yeah ...
in the last episode of ‘the champs’ podcast questlove goes deep into this. he agrees with you and larry
I feel like this just super isn’t true. Are we calling Wanda Sykes and Charlie Murphy’s roles on Arrested Development Token? Outside of Larry, his wife, his friend/agent and that guy’s wife I can’t even think of any other recurring characters on the show.
Yes. I think of my sister. She has never listened to rap or hip hop a day in her life. She has no love for Broadway and hasn’t seen a musical since my parents bought us tickets to Phantom when we were in high school - yet I noticed she follows Lin on Facebook now and keeps liking his status updates. I asked her if she…
Larry apologist!
Listen, I’m not defending Larry.
