Chicago will ticket you for expired tags even if it’s a day late. I sent in my registration a little late and got a ticket the day after they expired. Chicago doesn’t give you a break when it comes to any sort of parking infractions.

I had this happen, I got 6 tickets in 5 days because I didn’t really drive much at the time

That’s not the law here in Chicago. They are even allowed to enter parking garages, let alone driveways, and ticket cars with expired plates or no city sticker. If you live in Chicago, You have to pay for a city sticker, not if you just want to park on the street.

“The sun will never set on the Wakandan Empire”.

He wanted to conquer the world through the violent overthrow of the Other. He wanted the exact same thing every tyrant has always wanted. He didn’t want to break a cycle of oppression or hatred, he just wanted his turn at the wheel.

I grew up in a family without a lot of money. Our dog lived a long life on garbage dog food. I realize this is one example, but I’m sure there are many more.

When you woke up this morning, did you think of yourself as someone who would call the teenaged survivor of a mass shooting a liar on the internet, or are you surprised to learn that about yourself?

Thank you for reminding me why I don’t want to work retail again. That couple should have been kicked out. Their money is not necessary.

even refused my help because they said that if I was willing to lie about my name

I’m ethnically Asian but have an Anglo name and was raised in Australia so have an Aussie accent and only speak English.

My sister gets a lot of “What is their father?” and “What are they?” in reference to her kids (she’s very pale and blonde and is married to a dark-skinned Nicaraguan) when she’s out alone with them. She’s much kinder than I am and tries to take people at their best intentions, but has occasionally answered “Human” to

Yup. I’m a white woman and no one ever asks me that. They’ll say “are you from around here?” Or “where did you grow up?” But typically only when I offer up how long we’ve lived here. Despite the fact that I possess a green card no one will ever ask me “where I’m really from”.

I appreciate this article and all of its points, and I’m sorry you’ve dealt with this crap, too. I have to admit something (please don’t shame me) - I’m an immigrant (I was born in South Africa); we are German Jews who spread out all over the place after the Holocaust. I was born in SA and then we moved to the U.S.

One couple when I worked retail even refused my help because they said that if I was willing to lie about my name (only white people can have Western names, according to them, and us Asians must have other names), then I wouldn’t be truthful in other ways.

I’m a naturalized citizen and am proud to be Chinese born. But when people go down that stupid rabbit hole of “but where are you REALLY from” I usually dig my heels in and say Delaware. Not because I’m ashamed of being an immigrant, but because people who ask questions in that way don’t deserve to know the truth. And

I flipped the script one time and ask them the same questions they asked me (including, “where is your family really from”). He eventually said that his family was Ireland. So I told him to go back to Ireland so that he could be surrounded by a sea of shiny white faces.

Same, but I’ve dug in now:

It’s easy to speak without offending people.

“Sadly this woman didn’t die” what is wrong with you

It doesn’t happen as much anymore, but as a female, in the past I would frequently get the second degree about whether I knew what I was doing when I went to get parts. And then there were times when I was brought the wrong part, insisted it was the wrong part, showed them why it was the wrong part, and was still

This. This is probably the worst experience I’ve had/seen. My wife goes into a store and asks for something and they start asking her if she’s sure that’s what she needs.
