I’ve been doing this technique as part of my regular hygiene routine for many years now: wet the Q-tips from the bathroom sink as hot as possible, the hot water melt the wax. It sends a shiver down my spine when I put it in my ear, but otherwise I have never had a bad effect (like scalding, etc).
