This was my impression as well. It didn’t seem like he was against marriage and she gave him an ultimatum, but rather that it wasn’t an important thing to him and he hadn’t planned on getting married, but then he found out how important it was to her and decided to do it.

I can’t think of a many relationships that work out when one partner feels forced to do something to stay in the relationship.
