Well to be 100% honest without watching it again I can’t say for certain if they mentioned slavery, I checked some sources before replying but I was pretty sure they mentioned it in the movie... If not in the movie then maybe in the Clone Wars cartoon which is still cannon.

Well we actually do, Chewbacca was a major player in the Battle of Kashyyyk from Episode III. Yoda went there to free the Wookiees from being enslaved by the Separatists, and met up with Chewbacca and other Wookiee leaders to help the clones fight the battle up until Order 66 came through.
