In Texas, school funding is tied to attendance. So my district had a policy where Juniors and Seniors could be exempt from finals for any class where they had an A and no more than 3 absences or a B and no more than 2 absences. In my experience PTO in lieu of separate sick and vacation just drives people to come in sick. At my workplace, we had a manager have to send his entire department home because they get each other sick and didn’t want to use PTO for being sick.

Counter point: Sick days are vacation days, just named something else as well as the other way around. The days of you must have a doctors note if you’re sick are, thankfully, numbered. 

You won’t get fired.  You just won’t be assigned any hours for the next 3 months.

Every employed adult in America thinks being out sick will get them fired or not promoted. 

Come to California, paid sick days are required by law.

We had some documented evidence of abuse through email and some witnesses (but not to that particular threat). In the end though I’m not even sure the judge looked at it. He just that, “That’s illegal,” and awarded unemployment benefits.

This is definitely something true in my office as well. Everyone has a laptop and VPN connections to the office servers, and already allowed to work from home as they’d like and encouraged to do so when weather is bad. So almost no one takes real sick days, we just go home and keep working.

To be fair, some bosses are really shitty about people calling in sick. I once had a job when I was younger where my boss required a doctor’s note if you called in sick. So if you couldn’t afford to go to the doctor or just didn’t need to (like with most viral colds), you were screwed and just had to go in or lose

I started a new job a year ago and have realized that in my new office, there is really no such thing as a sick day - there are only “work from home because they aren’t feeling well” days. It’s like everyone is fighting to make sure everyone else knows “but I’ll be on email all day!”
