I think this is why I find all of those amateur take-downs of, say, The Last Jedi, so annoying and solipsistic: they’re condescending and pedantic while being blissfully ignorant of the larger context of criticism and analysis. (i.e., “It’s like a discipline without the discipline of all of the discipline.”)

Buddy Babylon is the funniest book I’ve ever read and I’ve bought it as a gift for at least three people (plus used copies are like $1). That and You are Worthless.

I remember when Fear of a Black Planet went to number one right after SoundScan was introduced.  It sort of presaged the cultural shift that was coming.
