I think you missed a very important word in the sentence you quoted. That word is "net". Net means after taxes, etc. You're thinking gross, which is before taxes.

That only works if you're presented with a login page. With iGoogle, when you're signed out, it takes you to google.com/ig, which just says "You've been logged out. Log in to see your stuff" with a button that takes you to the login page.
