I wondered about this, too. But after studying Kelly’s offense, I really think it’s been a limiting factor.
I bet the Niners go defense at #7 or trade down if they can. Kap isn’t a perfect fit, but Kelly needs someone like him (strong, durable, familiar with zone reads) to really translate his ORE offense to the pros. I’m hoping the Niners draft Vernon Adams with a late-round pick.

This is a valid concern and I suspect the Niners will go all in on defensive depth in the draft. That said, Kelly’s defenses actually played better in the second half of games every year he was in PHI. Not what you would expect if they were gassed from being on the field too much.
I’m hearing from some knowledgeable PHI fans that Kelly never wanted to be GM in the first place. That he took on that role mostly to prevent Roseman from making personnel decisions.
