It’s like politics here. You can figure out a good deal about a person by which fish fry they go to. 

I have been to mislabeled “fish boils” held by churches and Lion’s clubs that were actually a fish fry. I just figured the term was a throwback to when beer batter hadn’t been perfected. I never really thought people still did this on purpose and other people paid money to eat it.

My Mom just reminded me that they did a Fish Boil a couple times a year at the Son’s of Norway hall. We didn’t attend these but Grandpa did drag me to the Christmas meal of Lutefisk, Lefsa and meat balls. I asked Grandpa once why we subject ourselves to Lutefisk every year and he said it was so we can be thankful for…

So what is a fish boil versus a fish fry?

Quick survey of my FB Wisconsin friends and the consensus is a Fish boil can also be heard in the tourist driven areas of the state.

Fish Fry, FRY. A boil implies water and I don’t know anyone who boils fish on Friday. You might hear this around the Illinois border but not much father north of the Cheddar Curtain.

I was in a part of Wisconsin that had the one Popeyes in the state not encased in bullet-proof glass that just happened to have a chick-fila pretty close. The popeyes sandwich was pleasant but bland.
