I like that, as a Mariners fan, I can see this as both the right move AND a severely underwhelming one.

My best guess is that he’s swinging for the VP nod on a Centrist-ish ticket. In any other election, a Biden/O’Rourke ticket would have pretty damn good odds.

For all of the sensationalism in the book, I think Fire and Fury got it right. Trump and his entourage never wanted him to get the job; they wanted him to lose juuuuuuust close enough (but not too close) that he could wield influence over his devout followers on the media landscape.

Cynical Theory: The Dems are smart enough to know that Fox won’t treat their debate fairly, but they value the low-to-middle class, blue collar white vote so heavily that they needed a “reason” to back out without making the whole “independent that has economic anxiety” crowd think that the Dems are biased.
