having just replaced mine this is a fairly straightforward task, and the steps above came close to my experience. However it varied a little. A better way to cut the patch piece. If your squared off hole is 4 inches square, cut your patch piece as a 6 inch square. Score the drywall with a razor on one side in a tic-tac-toe pattern where the center square is the size of your hole. Then carefully snap the drywall along the score lines being careful to not rip

As a long-term Virginia resident, reading this bothers the crap out of me.
