I purchased an $18 Home depot box fan, a high-end furnace filter of the same dimensions (20" x 20" x 1") and a bunji cord to hold the two together. This gets rid of allergens, pollen, and odors. I recall reading in a Lifehacker post that this is 90% as effective as one of those $400+ HEPA air cleaners.

I grew up in a household where if anything had any value, even for parts, you would hold onto it because you “might need it” in the future.

One thing I’ve noticed is that once you’ve accepted the taste of tea or coffee without sweetener, you realize how the good stuff tastes and never miss the sugar. If you accidentally get a mug with sugar in it, it tastes awful!

I’m not advocating this in any way, but there is the old trick of placing a water bottle in the seat pocket with the tray table down, preventing the person in front from reclining. Same effect, and you won’t get kicked off the plane.

There are people employed as investigators. Once a person fills out the clearance form, the investigators go to work and they are usually quite thorough. Lying on these forms may hurt worse than losing a job, and it ain’t worth it for $5 in a checking account in Grand Caman.

Once when working for a “butts in seats” kind of boss, I took one of my smart switches and plugged my lights into it. I could tell Alexa to turn on the office lights from anywhere. 

Here’s a trick I use: Look for satellite dishes on local homes (DirecTV, Dish, that sort of thing). Almost all if these point to birds in geocentric orbits in the Southern sky. 

Still good for rough estimate. Think of what goes into a Pound Cake (at least originally): a pound of flour, a pound of sugar, a pound of milk (1 Qt.), plus the other stuff. 

I always know that 1 liter is roughly 1 quart and go from there. When in Canada for example, I can multiply the liter price by 4 to compare to gallon pricing in the US. I also know a pint of liquid = 1 lb., so a quart = 2 lbs., etc.
