My partner once joked about removing the last chapter of a book I was hooked on (because I was ignoring him to read). I looked up, looked him dead in the eye, and said nothing. Stared for 30 seconds then went back to reading.

Second that. Adjunct professor here, and I don’t waste time calling out students who are goofing off, as long as it’s not bothering other students. The students who pay attention get the good grades, and the ones who don’t, well ... it’s a self-correcting problem.

For that matter, I’ve gone back for some classes recently and a lot of them were cell phone free per the professor. Smaller classes, not many hundred person lecture halls, but still. It wasn’t a big deal at all. If you’re feeling so ignored and disrespected, teacher, be the actual teacher and address it. 

Wow. I taught college classes for 20 years, and it never once occurred to me that I might call the campus police to handle an issue with a student. And an issue of perceived respect? Please. In large lecture rooms, sometimes you can’t prevent students in the back from whispering or even talking to each other. Phone or…
