I think that the believe that only “evil” people commit acts like this keeps victims from being believed actually.

There is a difference between having an expectation of privacy and wanting your picture posted to social media by strangers. If you don’t understand the difference please smash your phone against your forehead repeatedly until you break it.
And please have a friend film you doing so and post it everywhere.
Just because you CAN post a photo of someone who’s out in public doesn’t mean you should. We’ve also run pieces about street photography encouraging people to ask permission before snapping a pic of someone.
I know of a few parents who would feel more chagrinned than amused to find they caused their child needless pain.
While I do think it’s right to expect an activist like Tamblyn to be talking to her husband when he fucks up, I also don’t think we should expect her to be able to perform the miracle of being able to transform her oaf into someone properly woke or to air their marital disputes on these issues in public.
Not every role is for every actor and this is pretty widely acknowledged and not all that controversial, unless you want to be purposefully obtuse about it. Selma wouldn’t really have been the same movie with Brad Pitt playing MLK now would it? I, Tonya woulda been kinda weird with Leonardo Dicaprio playing Tonya…
Because she’s potentially taking the role from a trans actor and she seems quite unapologetic about it. At least Tambor pretended to care that he took a role that could have been played by a trans person.
Yeah, yeah, yeah but Ghost in the Shell bombed so while your argument might explain why this is sometimes done it doesn’t explain why Johansson and Sanders are being given more money to burn by miscasting a lead role...again.
She’s a producer on the project too. Take a seat.
I used to like Scarlett but she makes it so difficult. Just listen to criticism and respond thoughtfully. People may even think you’re a better person for it. Imagine that!
And would you say a single word if an English emigre family sent their kids back to the UK for a year to hang out with relatives? Or if a Japanese family did that?
The comments on the Slate version of this story are horrific. No empathy, no compassion, just anger that this little girl's mother broke the law by being here. A bunch of European-Americans acting like all of their great-grandparents arrived here legally, and of course learned perfect English immediately. Bullshit.
You’re goddamn right it’s unsafe, we live in a world that is incredibly unsafe for immigrants, women, minorities, anyone who loves truth. It’s a terribly unsafe world and it will take brave voices who make brave choices to change the world or else we’re all fucked.
no
Yes, the “So she was asking for it” defense really justifies the shitty comments.
Or, these types of articles work to delegitimize trans identities and experiences among allies and potential allies, thus reducing safety for all trans people and making it easier for fascists to harm trans folks with no protection from allies.
As Harron pointed out, the fact that there is not much research and writing about trans issues means that what DOES get published carries a lot of weight and power with the average joe’s reading it. The fact that this cis person has irresponsibly become a sort of spokesman for “trans issues” (putting that in quotes…
“I’m not interested in sharing this list or any other space with someone who is going to insist on nullifying and erasing my existence and experience as female,” a prominent futurist in progressive news media wrote back.
The fact that they toss out around the word “groupthink” so freely while ensconced in a secret, private listserv where they happily jerk each other off about how great they are is pretty much the epitome of the problem.
Fuck that guy, fuck Walgreens, and fuck the law making it ok.
