I'm playing Spelunker for the NES. Which is very similar. Is Spelunky inspired by spelunker?

That's an interesting design/brain cheat you stumbled onto. Objects that look bulky and large look more sturdy. They might not be, and the same studies tell us smaller objects have greater integrity, but it's what we perceive.
