I think most consumers have realized they don't need a true 4x4 (I'm thinking of those with a traditional, RWD, solid rear axle and a 2 speed transfer case) when AWD gets them by just as good when it gets snowy and they don't have to deal with the extra weight of the traditional stuff, not to mention the noisy, jerky…

Definitely... in the mid 90's you could get an F150 with a manual transmission for any of the engines available. You could also get a manual or electronic transfer case no matter the tranny choice.
