ok, I feel bad now because I recently donated my Twilight series.

Anyone else remember the Sylvia Smith-Smith stories that ran in Seventeen magazine in the 1980s? The ridiculous naming was only a tiny part of our heroine’s backstory, but it was a funny commentary on the BS compromise of hyphenated naming.

I can’t believe this is the only non-perfume-gushy post I’ve seen so far!

I was surprised how much I liked Tara’s commentary when she started on ice network. Now that she’s on NBC and it’s the Tara n Johnny show, not so much.

That calling didn’t exactly start with Lipinski. I’d blame the elimination of compulsories rather than Tara.

ALL HAIL THE KWEEN!

No way would I have this conversation with my mom. I wouldn’t even have this conversation with my sister! I’m impressed with how cool and level headed both mom and daughter are here, and particularly what a great perspective the daughter has on her own sexual activity.

I didn’t think you were including it as bad-but-acceptable service, just wanted to point out that there are times when no tip is warranted, even for customers who regularly tip quite well.

The only times I have NOT tipped has been when a server has been inappropriately personal/sexual or harrassing. That’s not “having a bad day” on the job, it’s being a creepy fuck. Those times have been extremely rare - but I’m not going to encourage it by paying for it.

Don’t know about those other states, but Washington does NOT have paid parental leave. There was a program created in 2007 to act the way you describe, but it has not been activated.

Why the backlash over asking where the money comes from? I would also like to know - who pays for it in other countries? Is it government? Employers? A combination? The answers above are illuminating, because when the question comes up I always think that employers are the ones who are supposed to provide it - and

I went to a Quaker HS (not Sidwell) and it was very down to earth. Not that there weren’t some typical teen/HS clique-y issues, but compared to my previous school, and the stories other friends told? It was an awesome HS experience.

wasn’t that Reagan?

why would the women sitting next to the orthodox men be asked to move? why not make the dudes move? it’s their issue. As long as the dudes don’t have middle seats (which really - that increases the odds of sitting next to a women so just no) they could probably easily find someone to trade seats, without being such

OF COURSE there is an exception for artificial insemination (while an exception for rape is conspicuously absent).

Somewhere Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchinson are kicking themselves for not thinking of this.

How about adding a huge SF city tax to individuals making over $100K a year that goes directly into services for the poor and homeless. You know, like job training, education, substance abuse and mental health programs.

I cry a little when I see what Joan Jett has done to her face. it’s not just that the plastic surgery is noticeable - it’s that she’s now got a very typical celebrity face and wears same-same celebrity makeup. It’s a gut punch in the same way that Ally Sheedy finding happiness in The Breakfast Club meant becoming just

But we don’t. We really don’t. Outside of modeling/showbiz/media journalism, it’s shockingly easy to spend very little effort on appearance and still be considered professional.
