I’ve been saying for ages that speed limits should be in terms of kinetic energy rather than speed. If a 9,000 lb hummer is allowed to go 60 mph, I should be allowed to go *checks notes* 270 mph in my Elise.

As an EV owner, I’m fully on board with this. I imagine a road usage fee at $x per mile, multiplied by a weight factor. The weight factor could be something like (curb weight/4000lb) so that people driving cars lighter than 4000lb will actually get the road fee reduced.

With EVs taking gas taxes away that are used for roads we should instead switch to taxing based on miles driven and weight. The heavier cars put more wear and tear on the roads anyway. So if vehicles will pay less tax when lighter that will incentivize car makers and buyers to care about weight 

It kind of feels like they’re doing it this way on purpose, to make it seem like it works better than it does. Slowing down or stopping for only moderate uncertainty would make it look like the shit it is.
