How come every time I try to go from 5th to “R”ace in my 6 speed coupe it makes a loud noise?

My weirdest glitch came a few years ago when I was getting on the high way in my new 6 speed Cobalt SS.... was in 4th gear pulling hard into 5th (will not disclose the speed I was doing) and I was about 1,000 rpm tell redline when I threw it in R (some cars call it 6th, I think mine meant “race”)... all hell broke…
