To add to your point, pro football reference shows that the Pats pretty consistently had a negative strength of schedule the last 10-12 years, often in the bottom of the afc. When they played a harder schedule, they either missed the playoffs or did not make the super bowl.

Unless it was someone like Lebron, I doubt the response would be any different than it was in the 90s. That player would be out of the league in two years and there would be rules about player comments on twitter. 

You’re at least twenty years slow on this one. Considering they suspended Abdul-Raouf and then enacted a rule requiring players to stand during the anthem, the NBA has always been clear that it does not care for any kind of social commentary that might conceivably impact the bottom line.
