The only two generals to have been SECDEF are George Marshall and James Mattis. Most former SECDEFs who have served in the military got out as mid-level officers and only some of them served in combat.

I personally think a former military lawyer would be an ideal SECDEF. It’s not like they are going to be charging a bunker with a bunch of Lance Corporals.
