My girlfriend at the time rented me a GT-R for my 24th birthday - all drivers (myself, wife and 2 friends) deserve hefty tickets for our time in that car. Incredible machine, and the price is extremely fair given the experience.
Finding this out the hard way. Recently picked up a used BMW wagon, perfect in most snow conditions - except for snow emergencies when there is 10-14" and I am unable to park the car in un-plowed areas. Wife and I will need a second winter car next snow season, this Volvo is a contender.
I don’t - it was perfect car for me in my early twenties and all burgeoning track junkies. May it forever stay isolated in time! (Please don’t ruin it!)
Neutral - my wife and I will by buying a car this year to better suit our changing needs (real winter). We have a serious short list that changes almost daily, likely submitting to What Car Should You Buy, why should we have all the fun!
Purchased in fall 2018. Spent 10 years renting in below market lower quality San Francisco Bay Area housing, uprooted and moved to Minneapolis where housing prices are reasonable and purchased a modest home. Zero chance of doing that in California.
Helps to have low expectations, early adopters heaping on praise.
Bingo - its a useless car made for folks who assume riding higher off the ground begets a better vehicular experience. Bigger, heavier, slower, more cramped than its Mazda3 counterpart.
We did not accept the car, my wife balked at the idea. The dealer reordered the correct car with an additional $1K discount for our patience and continued business. Had to wait a total of 18 weeks between the initial order and correct car arrival.
We were able to knock $3.5K off a custom order BMW 228i. In fact it ended up being $4.5K after a dealer mistake meant our car showed up automatic instead of manual. Still a great experience, never hurts to ask for a discount!
E36 M3s with S54 swaps are the future outlaw builds (and half of the present track builds).
Very limited - spread the word fast and far the best you can and be ready with $$ when it counts. Leh Keen is looking for one, the man also owns a WRC 22B as a qualifier...
Glad to hear Chuck will rise again with a newer build (or rebuild)! Precise execution, this guy must be some sort of engineer.
There are a few 335i E91 builds out there already, along with the E91 M3 style as well.
Perhaps the true goal is to help phase MT to lower separate R&D and tooling costs - “look, the data show consumers buy less manuals!” even if that manual is now a lower spec model.
How many manual cars is manual enough? 3 out of 4 cars are manual today, and my wife and I will be consolidating two towards a wagon/hatch/suv. For the next car all I want is a modern automatic, not some 4-speed archaic POS.
Is it too good? Is there any charm or character left in the car?
Let the reality sit in here, almost nothing will change. I see 10-15 cars daily with rusted out exhausts, no mufflers or straight pipes - cops are far and few and largely policing more serious matters.
It hasn’t been the easiest path forward, granted I have the ‘while you’re in there’ disease and have spent money to modify and track the car.
Owned at separate times, my wife and I have different tastes as it were.
