I love how all these commenters are looking down their noses at you, absolutely clueless that you've been a starred/hearted/kinja'd/whatevered contributor since 2007. Good lord. For the record, people: Jan has kids, has been building this community since you were in jr. high and was IMHO only pointing out that…
Home school students whose parents subscribe to fee-based testing score higher than public school students. That's a very small subset of homeschooled students, and really doesn't mean much. I learned to verify data and testing methods as a public school student.
And plenty of home-schooled kids learn little to nothing of truth or value. Like the commenter below whose SIL is "home-schooling" her six children minimally because they're going to grow up to be ... carpenters? That's probably - hopefully - an extreme and rare example. But I also have a [distant, thank god] relative…
I mean if "your mom masturbates to make her depression go away" is the new "your mom goes to college," I'm okay with it.
My kids are age-appropriately aware of what I do for a living, and will continue to be as they get older.
You've got a great point. Women shouldn't do anything provocative for fear of social repercussions of her children.
It's not even New Age or hipster!
I was homeschooled. I followed a normal curriculum that had no religious influence at all. I was supervised by a credentialed teacher who I could email or call if necessary. I graduated two years early from high school. Nothing wrong with homeschooling if it's done right.
I'm a teacher in Philly. The level of abuse that occurs to some children and they are left in those homes is just astounding!!!!! Maybe when we report the neglect, physical and sexual abuse we should mention that they also walk home alone. Maybe that'll get some fucking results.
This is bullshit. Call it whatever new-age hipster shit you want, these parents have the right idea. There is ZERO wrong with letting your kids walk home together, especially if the distance is short. That's how they learn independence. It's how they become more aware of their surroundings, and it's how they learn to…
Homeschooling should be illegal
this is happening where I live, so two interesting notes on the law:
I was 5 in DC with a single dad at the time. I wandered around quite a bit.
Honestly, I'm less panicked over this than I am when I read about kids being "home-schooled."
This is crazy. A 10 and a 6 year old, together, are old enough to walk home.

Can My Whole Weekend Is Ruined! be a series? Cause this shit is hilarious. Also, true.
"The good news is, unlike Netflix which had a special to run, we're developing a script—we didn't even have a first draft … I'm glad we're out from under that."
