I know, right? Mädchen, iirc, comes from a gender-neutral ancestor word for child, but it really is kind of icky that it’s stuck around for so long. It’s always weirded me out too.

I quite agree with your idea that it is so rampant because of our rigid linguistic system. I haven’t seen a ton of transphobia first hand,weirdly/luckily enough, but just the other day a colleague was waxing outraged that Trudeau was all in for the third gender, how dare he, this will cause all sorts of rampant sexual…
Quite interesting, but probably won’t become really mainstream here. People are already throwing hissy fits over things like “Lehrer/Innen” or making a distinction between “trans” and “cis” because apparently trying to be more inclusive when it comes to gender means being a crazy feminazi who is trying to destroy the…
Good question, and I’m not 100% sure about this. The 3rd gender will be referred to as “divers” or “inter” (so “diverse” or “in-between”), and it was an intersex person who went to court over this, so it seems to mostly be for people who are biologically neither strictly male nor female.
German is a grammatically gendered language. So yes, they have feminine/masculine designations for words.
I was unaware that the flag had hearts on it...
The Franks were German. They moved to the Netherlands when the situation got unbearable in Germany. But Anne was definitely born in Germany.
Marxism =/= Stalinism
My middle school in Germany was built in a cross shape in the 70s. Stricter fire safety regulations meant that they had to add more fire exits/external stairs for the upper floors in the 90s. Guess where and in which angle they chose to add them to the building? The school went through several remodelings since then,…
Yeah, I can’t fathom why anyone would be against unionizing to bargain fair compensation for what I’d argue is freelance reportage. Knowledgeable representation of some sort, whether through an agency or labor association, is critical if you want to work as a photographer without getting taken advantage of — doubly so…
I’m white, but I’m not THAT white.
I’m starting to get this feeling that Trump does not like black people.
Why an 18 year old Soldier in a war zone running on 70 hours of no sleep is held to a higher standard of skill, professionalism, and discipline than a police officer in Anytown USA is beyond me; and to think that 18 year old Soldier would be less competent than the officer if the roles were reversed is unfathomable.
Why are US police so violent towards everybody? Are they afraid? Insecure? Misogynists? Wannabe-army? What’s wrong with them? The police in the UK would never handle a sober, non-aggressive, non-violent suspect in this manner, let alone another member of an emergency service. In the UK this would be big news, and…
You know, I’m going to have to disagree with the pharmacy raiding being a “non-necessity.” My husband’s a type 1 diabetic. I’m bipolar. If we weren’t able to grab our meds/insulin/pump supplies/needles in time (which, I hope we’d be able to) or if they got waterlogged when we were trying to get out and up to higher…
There is nothing to apologize for. The Llamas are a very forgiving group of animals.
I’m leaving on a trip, but I’ll pack a star for you.
