We live in an old apartment building where you can hear the main door downstairs open and close, and every day I see my cats ignore that door for 99% of the time until my partner opens it and walks up the stairs, and they get up and wait for him at our own front door. I DO NOT hear the difference.

My kitty used to be able to hear me coming from down the street... didn’t matter what time I was getting home, my housemates knew if he got up and sat by the door, I would be up (we lived on the 3rd floor) shortly. I have a somewhat distinctive gait so I’m sure that helped him out.
