I’ve worked in a library, and sometimes all it takes is one person to challenge a book. Most, if not all librarians would fight tooth and nail to NOT ban any book no matter what the content. But in reality it is usually up to the boards, who are not generally open to freedom of information.

I don’t know for sure, but my take is that the American version just didn’t make as much money as the studios hoped it would. They thought it would exceed the success of the Swedish trilogy, and when it didn’t they just washed their hands of it and probably made another super hero movie instead.
