The problem is you're basically saying 'Nokia, don't show us any new handsets till 2012.' Criticising Nokia for releasing a MeeGo phone is wrong the same way criticising RIM for BlackBerry 7 is wrong: yes, it's too little and yes, they need totally new software. But that takes time, and in the meantime, you can't

Nobody likes a smartarse.

I see what you mean. I don't know, I know a lot of people who have a really old TV (4:3 CRT) but are more likely to buy an iPad than a new TV because an iPad is a New Thing, as opposed to just an upgrade to an existing thing. But neither of us really know what The Folks Out There are thinking, I guess.

I didn't know about nested labels, so thanks for that. Re signature tweaks: all well and good, but really, it's bizarre google doesn't let you just not include the signature on replies and forwards, as outlook has for a billion years.

I'm so ready for this to be great... and *so* ready for it to be a massive disappointment.

Nonononononononnno. This is untrue. Almost every page on the web has to be scrolled up and down to be read in its entirety. Looking at (say) Engadget on an iPad, yes, you have to zoom in onto the text area to read it easily, but that's a simple double-tap and then you can read a long piece without much scrolling. In

My replies in the conversation are aaaaall over the place, for some reason.

Honestly? I'm kind of projecting from a ridic conversation I had about this with m1ndtrip last week.

Also: awesome username.

It's weird; in general, I agree that clearly all tablets are basically going to look the same. But there is something *particularly* iPad-like about this one that I can't put my finger on, much as with Samsung's recent smartphones (though that's more obvious as they have a home button).

Ahm. Please believe me when I say this wasn't a deliberate attempt at star-baiting!

Well, we're arguing about semantics a bit. But I wouldn't say 'media consumption' is something you do with a toy. Toys are not just for leisure, they're for *play*, which is a very specific thing.

No, that's certainly right, you can't. I'm just making the point that there are a lot of old tvs out there. The 'kind of people' who still use 4:3 TVs - non-techy people - are exactly the people Apple is selling a boatload of iPads to.

I suspect they won't do a full review until it's clear whether the retail version will have TouchWiz or not. Also, Gizmodo reviews are always pretty short and perfunctory, which I rather like. Engadget or This Is My Next or even CrunchGear would be better for a detailed, in-depth buyer's guide review.

I think the point is that all the Android tablets so far have underperformed commercially, and part of the reason may be that they don't have the 'amaze' factor Matt is describing, and the iPad does. So the first 'amazing' Android tablet is actually big news.

Have you ever read a book?

Here's a reply that isn't about movies: cheaper parts. I guess all the component makers are geared up for 16:9 these days.

I don't have stats to hand, but I'd bet money the majority of TVs out there in use in the US are still 4:3.

USB port, HDMI port, to give two examples of things Samsung has eschewed here to make a sleek, minimal iPad-like device.
