Oddly, minus the vaping, this is the best photo of him I’ve seen in years! (I think he’s aging in a weird way - I swear he starts looking more and more like a cat every year. Or maybe I’m the weird one, I don’t know.)

That’s the factor that probably stresses me out the most - it’s okay now for us to help my mom in small ways, but we’re expecting our first child any second now (she’s literally due today!) and I know that will change our financial picture a lot - saving for normal kid expenses, plus college, and then having to think…
She has asked for my help with smallish things like car repairs, yes. But to be clear, none of the big things that I’m concerned about have actually hit yet (like fully replacing the car and fully replacing the roof.) Or if her property taxes go up substantially.
Yeah, she knows it stresses me out, but she has this “just don’t worry about me, everything will be fine no matter what” attitude. Which, again, stresses me out because it’s coupled with zero planning or safety net for any larger expenses - the roof I already mentioned, but any plumbing issues, appliances, house…
We only check in once a month or so, just to see how it’s doing. It’s nice to look in on your money (most of the time) and see it accumulate (most of the time.)
Yeah, I should totally “chill” that my financially irresponsible mother, now nearing 70, still has no savings, health problems that are increasing, a car on its last legs and a house that needs a new roof. I’m sorry it’s not very chill of me, but some people have irresponsible parents and then have to take care of…
I think you’ll be totally fine! You are so ahead of the game, starting in your 20s. I went through a divorce at 28 that financially wrecked me. I didn’t start really saving until around 33 or so and am still doing fine to be secure when I plan to retire (at about 70 - but I really enjoy working, so I’m choosing to…
Our 401k was hit pretty hard as well - sucks to see it happen, but yes, it will eventually come back, barring any sort of great depression/recession type disaster. And even then... eventually! (Very eventually, anyway.) Hope your retirement fund rebounds soon.
Ugh, it drives me crazy that my mom retired so thoughtlessly. Despite her intelligence and good job, she’s impulsive and she decided to retire immediately after my grandmother died and left her enough money to pay off her house. She has a pension, so is fine getting by each month, but she retired with NO savings.…
Aw, too far, sadly. We live in North Hollywood arts district, and my husband works downtown (in Little Tokyo.) His work schedule is more flexible, so he’ll be doing all the drop off/pick up duties, so we’re looking either Noho/Studio City or downtown.
Yes, totally agree! And for me personally, I haven’t had to deal with a lot of “Berniebros” in my friend group, but I have had to deal with a lot of “Bernie is a saint/infallible/you should just shut up and trust him with everything because he doesn’t take Wall Street money” and it’s just not going to cut it for me,…
Oh god that’s horrible. My friend’s husband died of an asthma attack at 31, in front of her, and I cannot imagine anything so awful. Also, watching that happen to a child, as an educator, and being unable to help - that would stay with you your whole life.
Personally I’d like to ship both types to the moon and let them destroy each other.
Thank you! :)
Yeah, I’m just very hesitant to go forward with any super drastic changes as far as replacing the ACA, since it was such a god damned miracle (poor phrasing, haha) that it happened in the first place. But I’m definitely open to hearing more details of Bernie’s plan and who knows? Maybe in the policy journey it ends up…
Wow, really? That’s amazing. Was that his rate when he was an infant or toddler? (Our baby will be six months when she starts.) We’re currently still on the hunt in Downtown LA (where my husband works, cause he’ll be picking her up and dropping her off.) But Echo Park isn’t crazy far from downtown, maybe we’ll expand…
“...it’s not like Sanders is going to jeopardize the current system by trying to get something better in place.”
I’m also undecided between Hillary and Bernie and the big factor in my indecision is Bernie’s health care plan. I have like, 600 questions about how exactly it’s going to be accomplished, monetarily, logistically, and politically and none of my questions have been answered adequately by his camp’s explanations, yet.
Yeah, to echo what other commenters have said, that is not a crazy expensive day care, sadly. I live in the LA area and if you can find me a full time day care that costs less than 1k a month and is licensed by the state, I would kiss you on the mouth. The one we’re on the waiting list for costs $1300 a month and it’s…
This is fascinating to me because I never think about or care about shoes at all. (I seriously wear the same either black flats or black suede wedges every day.) I do wonder if I don’t care about shoes because I have slightly weird shaped feet (freakishly long toes) or, if I’m simply missing the caring about shoes…
