Stephen Colbert solved this pretty awesomely on his show tonight - he says if the crossguard blade extends all the way through, then even if you cut through the metal bit your blade gets stopped. The metal bit, then, is just to protect the wielders' hand.

NONE of their proportions make sense.

The thing is, it's not something that needs to be forced, and it doesn't have to be an agenda. It seems harder to make it so that two characters can only marry if certain conditions are met than to just let any character marry any other character.
