I kind of agree about Yoda and Obi-Wan, yet they were pretty callous and insensitive and dismissive in Ep. II when Anakin was worried about his Mom.
I think the other Jedi characters are so shallow that it's really hard to tell, but I wouldn't say Obi-Wan and Yoda failed at this. I think the institutional problem that Qui-Gon ran up against had more to do with the Jedi's ties to the Republic than with their thoughts on feelings.
Buddhism may be justification for practicing it, but practicing it the way the Jedi did, or 24/7, is arguably not healthy.
But as Ashoka and I were discussing, it seems I have a different definition of Detachment than many here or Buddhists in general.
Love this post.
But that's not detachment. Detachment, at least the way I interpret it, is essentially to go Spock on your feelings.
The problem as I see it, is that the Jedi had become TOO good at detachment. Never allowing emotions to sway them one way or another. In so doing, they detached themselves from the very thing they were trying to protect.
Ding ding ding.
You're right.
I just think letting him know he was the Chosen One and special did a lot towards making him think he was above the rules.
Yeah, I'm into Darth Plagueis being able to cheat death...but that Palpatine was too big of a badass to let him live. The Darth Plagueis novel is fantastic.
Could be, but there's nothing in any of the films to suggest this. What's more, Palpatine keeps hedging his words.
The part about saving Padmé was pretty much straight up falsehood.
Imagine how differently things would've gone if Anakin had been allowed to go back and free his mother, or if he hadn't felt the need to keep his relationship with Padme a secret.
nobody lied to him to make him do what he did.
Got it - I was confused. Ultimately, the question of Jedi and emotions has to do with how you deal with things. Anakin deals with everything really poorly. Probably a mistake to let him know he was the Chosen One...
Tell that to a Buddhist.
Anakin's interpersonal relationships shaped him, and grew the friendships and love whose failures turned his heart black.
